A surprise mariage proposal which took place during a planned private natural light photography session starting from the Bassin de l’Arsenal and finishing at the beautiful Jardin des Plantes. This young couple, visiting Paris from Switzerland, were a pleasure to work with and totally at ease in front of the camera.

As I outline to clients requesting this service, there are 2 ways I can cover your proposal in Paris:

  1. we can start with the proposal, by which your bride-to-be is completely unaware that she is being photographed.

  2. the proposal can be made part way through a standard couple lifestyle shoot, by which all parties are already aware of my presence (but not your intention to propose!)

This shoot followed the latter format, which is ideal if you are already nervous enough about proposing; it means that you don’t have the added concern of having to be in the right place at the right time.

There is a HUGE misconception that “nice weather" is the key to getting good photographs; as I outline in this article, this could not be further from the truth. This particular shoot is a fantastic example of how the diffused light produced by an overcast sky can be excellent for capturing facial expressions, which are always the main focus of intimate moments such as those captured here.

No shoot is ever the same; anyone considering natural light portraiture, or indeed any kind of outdoor photography booking, should alway be prepared to adapt as the unforeseen events can always occur, not only in terms of weather but also logistically. On the day of this shoot, due to transport strike which rendered nearly all public transportation unusable, we decided that the initially requested location (Trocadéro) simply wasn’t feasible. Thanks to years of experience, I was able to quickly propose 3 alternative routes starting right from the client’s hotel; at my recommendation, Jardin des Plantes was chosen, and they were delighted with both the experience and the results.
